many times, when I’m backing up manually, I’m doing that for a reason, such as testing a new plugin. I’d like to be able to capture that info in the backup name or description. Something like “before-testing-updraft-plugin” or “doing-optimizations”

Ah, I see… an upsell. I didn’t even realize it was a premium feature – it’s not advertised anywhere.
Anyway, a bummer that’s it’s not included in the free version, but I understand the need to make money.

IMHO, Agree – you Need to at least publicize that labeling backups is a premium benefit. It’s so basic a function that your plugin appears unthoughtout without it.
