    What is the best way to work around this error? I’m hosting the wp site myself on a dedicated Win2012 server and the postmeta table has in excess of 300,000 rows (all valid data – the site has over 9,000 pages/posts in it).

    the exact error I see is;
    0000.510 (0) Table wp_postmeta: Total expected rows (approximate): 334442
    0000.516 (0) [Warning] Table wp_postmeta has very many rows (334442) – we hope your web hosting company gives you enough resources to dump out that table in the backup

    thats the last entry in the log before it sets it to re-attempt the backup again.

    never mind… it throws the error on the screen but still completes the backup almost 2 minutes later. the message is just a little deceiving.
