How do I properly exclude files such as “core.9999” and “core.8888” (these are core dump files that I wish to avoid including in a backup). Same goes for “error_log” files. I would like to exclude them in
    a) the website root
    b) in the /wp-admin folder

I have tried a few excluding files configurations and none have worked. I am not including any spaces in the exclusion fields. Note that I’m running on a Linux machine.

    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi Daniel,

There’s an “exclude” field under the “WordPress core” checkbox at the top of the UpdraftPlus ‘Settings’ tab, to exclude files from your backup of files from that backup archive.

    Best wishes,
    David

    Hi David,
I tried this and the exclusion did not work.

Is the correct pattern in this case “core*” or “*core”? And will that exclude files of that pattern in both the root and /wp-admin/ directories?

    Thanks,
    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,

Wild-cards only work in the root directory. For files in sub-directories, it will only take a full, exact path; e.g.: wp-admin/core.9999

It’d be much better if you could configure your kernel to not dump core into wp-admin at all. Core dumps will contain dumps of memory, including anything sensitive stored in memory at the time – e.g. passwords. So, if they’re in wp-admin, then someone could potentially download them via the web.

    Best wishes,
    David
