I have used Updraftplus for several years now without too many problems. I am heavily reliant on it should a problem occur and I need to recover a site. I have 135 sites. I cannot check them all each week or month. At least it would not be efficient to do so. On several occasions now it has disappeared from the list of plugins as though it was never installed. As far as I can tell this may occur during an update. I have a case right now. I saw very briefly a message when I logged in that Updraftplus failed to update. That message has gone now. It is no longer showing in the plugin list. But I do know it is the plugins folder in the site. I see this around 5 times a year across 135 sites. It is unlikely to be a compatibility with other site plugins because I use pretty much the same set everywhere. I know how to fix it. I will have to go in with a file editor into the hosting and delete or rename the folder and reinstall it. It will pick up all of the settings and then be ok. The question is why?
I have left the site in that condition if you wish to take a look. I would like to prevent it from ever happening at all.
I visited a site 2 months ago to find that Updraftplus was missing, the same symptoms. When I renamed the folder and reinstalled it the last backup was 15 months ago. If that site had been attacked and taken down, I would have been in a lot of trouble recovering it. My expectation when I load any plugin into a site is it remains there.

Can you check with your host if they see any errors in their PHP error log around the time that the plugin was updated?

BryleMay 13, 2021 at 9:10 am #1124885MarkParticipantI have asked the host that question.
When did the last update come out?
I have the website access and error logs and have been through those back to the beginning of February. There is nothing of note in there. PHP errors might be something else of course. When I get a reply I will update this thread.

Last update 1.16.57 – 08/May/2021.
You can see our changelog here – https://updraftplus.com/changelog/Thanks,

UpdraftPlus does not have any code for removing itself (even if you de-install it; removal of plugins is done by WordPress core, not by the plugins themselves). So, you’ll need to look elsewhere to find what is removing it. Does your hosting company have a policy against backup plugins? If files (such as plugin files) simply disappear from your hosting, then that’s something I’d definitely ask them about, because as I say, it’s not something the plugin has any code in to do itself.

I have been using it for over 4 years, I have 135 installed sites with it on the majority >95% are fine. Occasionally I come across this problem. It has not been removed from memory. It has disappeared from the plugin list. What appears to have happened, and I am speculating here; it begins an upgrade, something fails during the upgrade, it does not get restored, and it no longer appears as a plugin on your site. A message appears briefly to advise the update has failed, but you do not see it again.
However it is still in memory, and if you try to install a fresh copy in, it will be rejected because the directory is in use. To reiterate; it has not disappeared in the hosting, it is still there. It has disappeared from the list of installed plugins. When this occurs which is not frequently it is a dangerous condition because you may not realise no backups are being created.
May 15, 2021 at 3:18 pm #1126889Karelle ScharffParticipantTo add my 2¢, I experience the exact same problem. Just had it happen this morning. UpdraftPlus is NOT in the list of plugins in WP admin, but it is in the Plugins directory, so that I have to clear it from that directory before I can reinstall. I use UDP on around 50 sites and it does this about once/month, on one site or another. Host has no problem with backup plugins, and there doesn’t seem to be anything in the site error logs that would point to this.
May 15, 2021 at 4:32 pm #1126931MarkParticipantSorry I am not the only one, but equally sorry that this does not seem to be taken seriously by UD team. Because I have had no response I have deleted the folder and reinstalled it again. So in this case the opportunity to look at a failed site with the problem has now passed. It picks up all of the settings. BTW I am with 20i.com in the UK. They are pretty good.
May 15, 2021 at 7:37 pm #1127027udadminKeymasterHi Mark,
The “Plugins” page in your WP dashboard will display an entry for every file which has a directory in wp-content/plugins and in which the directory has a file with a “plugin header”. It is WP core that constructs that list, not the plugins themselves. If you do not find UD in the list, then you need to look in that folder. Look for wp-content/plugins/updraftplus. Is the folder there? If so, read the top of the file wp-content/plugins/updraftplus/updraftplus.php – is there a header there? One reason why there can be no header there is that if your site gets hacked, then the header can get replaced by the hacker’s own chosen code.
