I’m trying to migrate a website to a test site so I can make updates. I tried to backup the site using their web hosting backup wizard, but it caused the website to crash. I can backup the site to Dropbox storage, but I still need some server space to be able to run the back up?

Its my understanding that their website crashed when I tried to use their web hosting backup wizard because they don’t have enough space. Can I back up their site to Dropbox storage only and not take up any space on their server?

    Hi Katie,

UpdraftPlus still needs space on the server to backup a site. The backup has to first create the backup files before it can send them to Dropbox. This includes creating temporary files and the final backup files.

You can minimise the amount of space that is needed by UpdraftPlus:

    • In the ‘expert’ settings at the bottom of the settings tab, reduce the ‘split’ setting down from the default. This will mean that UpdraftPlus needs less space for temporary files
    • If you are backing up manually, try backing up each part of the site separately. This means that only one section of the site is taking up space at a time before being uploaded to Dropbox.

    Best Wishes,
    David
