Just recently UpdraftPlus fails to complete any backup of my WordPress website, either automatically before a plugin upgrade or just as a straight forward backup. It will run for an hour and fail to complete. Also during the backup attempt it notifies me of an “unexpected response” to which I have to indicate okay to continue. Has anyone experienced this and can I get any clues from the log?
November 7, 2018 at 5:55 pm #317928Dee NutbourneModeratorHi,
Please could you send us a copy of the latest backup log where this occurred?
The contents will be too long to post here directly, but you can use an online service such as Dropbox or Pastebin, and post the link here.

ModeratorThank you for your quick response, David.
Below is the dropbox link to the latest log that failed to complete. I hope this will help solve the backup failures.

(I use my middle name actually but computer programs prefer middle initials – oh, well)November 8, 2018 at 5:49 pm #318180Dee NutbourneModeratorHi Ian,
Thank you.
From the log, it appears that the Google Cloud account that UpdraftPlus is attempting to upload to has been closed.
Please could you check your Google Cloud account and billing, and ensure that UpdraftPlus has been configured to upload to the correct account?

David NNovember 8, 2018 at 8:53 pm #318241Ian RentonParticipantDavid, when I renewed UpdraftPlus I also paid for Google Cloud Storage so I assumed that service would be automatically continued without my need to intervene. In any case I looked over my Google Cloud settings and everything appear to indicate that it is indeed active. I changed none of the settings for Google Cloud within UpdraftPlus.
A new backup is underway with the usual unanticipated response pop-up and the multiple interminable resumptions and huge 176MB on-disk sizes. I am sure it will fail to complete like the other recent backups.
It is interesting that all the problems seem to appear at the time of renewal of UpdraftPlus. There was a lapse of a couple of days before I renewed, could this have caused the problem?November 14, 2018 at 8:38 pm #319606Ian RentonParticipantDavid, I have not heard from you for a while. Here is an update on my efforts to fix the backup problem. My comments are not in any chronological order.
Following through on your suggestion that Google Cloud storage was not being seen by UpdraftPlus, I was able to trace the problem to an unidentified bucket. Why this occurred I don’t have a clue but systematic checking of each setting entry caught it. Once fixed I was able to make a complete backup with only one remaining problem that I’ll get to below.
In my search for a satisfactory cloud storage to complement UpdraftPlus, I chose to pay for a 3 month use of Updraft Vault to test this cloud storage. After a very simple install, this worked very well resulting in a complete backup but with the same one remaining problem as with Google Cloud. At about the two minute mark a popup window displayed with reference to an “unexpected response”. This window stopped the backup until the “Ok” button was pressed. It did not seem to be considered an error by UpdraftPlus. Can you explain what is happening and how I can stop this from happening? I can send you screen shots of the popup if you wish.Regards.

Apologies, my colleague is currently on holiday.
Please can you send us a screenshot of the error using this online tool https://snag.gy/.

I’ve uploaded four images into Snag.gy. These show the window that pops up when I run a backup in UpdraftPlus after several minutes of processing. The backup continues running to a successful conclusion (I thought otherwise earlier). Is this popup a function of my website or UpdraftPlus?
I do not know how you access the images as I have not used Snaggy before so I may need to link it or take some other action you advise.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Apologies for the delay.
Snag.gy should have given you a link to the image (e.g. https://snag.gy/5TAwZg.jpg)
Please could you post those links here?

https://snag.gy/4arQDd.jpg
https://snag.gy/PbOJvW.jpgMy guess is that the popup is generated by WordPress but I may be wrong. Does it identify a problem with the UpdraftPlus backup file?
I was able to correct my missing Google Cloud storage problem you identified and UpdraftPlus seems to work well now. UpdraftVault works better than Google Cloud though, as I found out.
Kind regards and thank for your help.

November 22, 2018 at 5:16 pm #321504Dee NutbourneModeratorHi Ian,
Apologies again for the delay.
The pop-up appears to be the HTML code for a 404 webpage.
This issue usually occurs when an error occurs on the server, but a security module masks the error with a ‘Page not found’ page. This would usually occur if the site encountered an error when a visitor attempted to visit the page. Rather than display the error code (which could be a security risk), the site instead gives a generic error.
However, in this case, the response is being returned to UpdraftPlus, which cannot handle it.
Please could you ask your hosts/server admin to check the PHP error logs for any fatal errors that may be occurring around the time of the backups? It may also be useful to check any logs for security modules or plugins on the site/server.
Best Wishes,
