    Hi,

Backing up WordPress core is redundant, since a) you can always download a clean copy from wordpress.org, and b) most people have 1-click WordPress installers in their web hosting, which installs WordPress for them. It’s only needed if you’ve either hand-modified WP core (not a good idea), or added other files to the directory manually that you want including.

If I don’t select wordpress core, will new files in the root folders be backed up?

htaccess, google webmaster verification html file etc.

That’s right. So, you should back those up if you want them. Backing up WordPress core is harmless in any case.
