UpdraftPlus already has more storage options than any other backup plugin we know of – Amazon S3, Dropbox, Google Drive, FTP, SFTP, Rackspace Cloud Files, Dreamhost Dreamobjects and WebDAV. Phew!
But, many more are on the way. We recently learnt that a lot of cloud storage providers provide an API (method of access) to make themselves compatible with Amazon S3. From their point of view, they can then get quicker adoption – because lots of code for working with Amazon S3 already exists, and is well-tested. People using their cloud storage don’t have to get new tools – they can use existing, proven ones.
In fact, that’s how UpdraftPlus already access Dreamobjects – using its S3-compatible API. This made us think… are there any more? It turns out that there are lots. Here’s a list grabbed with a couple of minutes on Google:
- Cloudian
- Cloudn Object Storage
- Connectria
- Constant Cloud Storage
- Eucalyptus
- Google Cloud Storage
- Nifty
- Nimbula
- … and many more (not heard of all of the above? Neither had we! There are loads…)
So, we figured – why not add all of these at once? Why not add an option to use any (whether on the above list, or not) S3-compatible provider, allowing the user to enter the extra parameter needed to make it all work? And that’s exactly what we’re doing. If you use a cloud storage provider that’s compatible with Amazon S3, then in the future it’ll be covered by UpdraftPlus – whether we’ve even heard of it or not. We expect this feature to land in our next public release, later this month.
