Some WordPress backup plugins are paid-only – there’s no free version available. Others are free-only – there’s nobody whose job or livelihood is on the line if they fail you.
In between, are “freemium” plugins, like UpdraftPlus, which have a free version available and a premium version with extra features and support for purchase.
Of course, we’re biased – but having been on this side of the fence, our experience has led us to this conclusion: you’re taking an increased risk unless you’re buying the premium version of a “freemium” backup plugin.
Why?
Because, with a paid-only plugin, there’s a hugely reduced test base. In fact, there’s hardly any real-world test base at all – the only users are paying users. There’s no huge army of people who are paying nothing, and who are ready to contribute feedback in a relaxed way as their side of the deal. For paid-only plugins, there will always be around 20 to 100 times or more as many “free” users as paid users on a freemium plugin. The installed base on a paid-only plugin is much smaller. Less corner-cases are found; fewer exotic setups are tested out; and as a result, the paid plugin cannot realistically be as widely tested. No matter how much testing you try to do on your own systems (and we’re sure our competitors do as much as they can, as we do), you can’t begin to dream of replicating the huge variety of what’s out there in the real world.
The backup engine of UpdraftPlus is the same in our free version as in our paid version. We don’t sell add-ons to improve reliability, but to add useful features. We want everyone to have all the reliability they can, where possible. How can we do that? Our backup engine is tried and tested on more setups than our paid-only competitors, talented as they are, can even dream of – because we’ve got many free users for every paid user, testing things out for us whilst getting a great backup experience for themselves in return.
So, why buy a Premium backup plugin like UpdraftPlus Premium? Because it’s got the support, it’s got the features, and it’s got the real-world testing that can give you the confidence that you’re getting the most reliable backup possible for your valuable data.
