I’m facing a dilemma regarding retention of old backups.
As I understand it, the only way to configure UpdraftPlus to automatically delete old backups is this: https://updraftplus.com/additional-updraftplus-retention-rules/
On most of my clients’ sites, there is no need to retain backups older than a month or two. There are also hosts that don’t have much space available to back up, they couldn’t exceed a specific size, for example.
Knowing this, several questions arose:
How do I set ANY backup older than X time to be automatically deleted?
How do I set a MAXIMUM SIZE that backups can occupy?
How do I include automatic backups before updating in retention rules?April 19, 2023 at 1:27 pm #1771666WJK Marketing e NRP Design LTDA 33.659.500/0001-99ParticipantThis reply has been marked as moderator-only.April 19, 2023 at 6:10 pm #1771901Paul BevanKeymasterHi Wiliam,
Thank you for your question. Here are some general guidelines:
How do I set ANY backup older than X time to be automatically deleted?
If you wanted to delete backups older than 4 weeks you could set a weekly backup schedule and retain 3 backups, for backups older than 3 weeks keep no more than 1 backup every 1 week. Here’s an example which would accomplish this for your files. How do I set a MAXIMUM SIZE that backups can occupy?
There is no maximum backup size setting however you can calculate the site and database size in Advanced Tools and then split your archives every 100mb to make your backups more manageable and reduce the risk of running into storage issues. How do I include automatic backups before updating in retention rules?
You cannot set them directly in retention rules, Automatic Backups are either on or off and it should be noted that Automatic Backups and ‘always keep’ backups are never counted in the retention limits.Best wishes,
Paul

Even if the hosting is full and the site is no longer able to make new backups?
I think these features are quite reasonable for a plugin as complete as yours. Is there a channel where I can suggest changes?

Manual backups are included in the retention limits unless you check “always keep”. You can certainly suggest new features.
Best wishes,
Paul
