Hi Guys,
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!
Consider creating a plugin that will allow me (us) to direct our backups to an offsite storage that resides on our personal networks (Intranet) in the form of an External USB drive and such.
I absolutely will not consider backing up to a cloud service whereby effectively losing ALL control of my very precious and valuable data as it is my income livelihood.
If ANY of the cloud servers such as Dropbox Amazon etc… should decide to deny me access for “whatever” reason, there is absolutely NOTHING I can do about it and my data can be held for ransom while my website is in a down state; this is not good but did happen to me via Facebook and was truly a warning going forward.
Currently, I have to “REMEMBER” to go into Updraft and download the backups to my download folder on the current workstation then move/copy them to the respective external harddrive; although this is effective, it does take a considerable amount of time.
I would suggest that you look at MacriumReflect software which is what I use to save the workstation operating systems such as Windows/Mac platforms. It allows me to save directing to the drive I want across my internal network.
I am not suggesting that you backward engineer their software but rather have your software engineers just consider what I am typing about and create a plugin to do the same for UpdraftPlus.
As a layman, I’m just envisioning that where you select “Dropbox”, “Amazon” “FTP”, SFTP” options for remote storage, you would simply have one that says “Network, Intranet or Internal Storage” or something like that. Then you just supply the path to something like \\Backups\UpdraftFiles\. Of course it would be solely the user responsibility to ensure the workstations/network are accessible.
I just guessing, perhaps a cron program can be used on certain workstations to go out to the WordPress Site and run the plugin that will send the already downloaded file in the default Updraft folder to the internal network.
I trust that is clear. :)
I would be happy to become a beta tester and I would definitely purchase the plugin if not a beta tester.
Hi,
The network drive that you are wanting to send a backup to…. what does it support? FTP? WebDAV? SSH? UpdraftPlus already supports each of those. If it doesn’t support any of those, then what does it support? (What exactly makes it a ‘network drive’ ?)
If it’s just connected to your PC, and isn’t network connected then see: https://updraftplus.com/faqs/can-make-backup-directly-pcmac/

Thank you for responding David,
Yes, I have a dedicated laptop with an A/C USB hub that has my external USB drives attached to it. The laptop is part of my LAN so once I download the backups from the workstation I have saved the WordPress files to, I send them over the LAN to the specific USB drive that houses the backups for that WordPress site.
I have an “aluminum foil hat suspicion” about saving my files to a cloud storage who controls their complete safety and accessibility.
Your software is great so I will just continue with my saving system.
Thank you just the same :)
Do you think Zapier could do something like this or will they have the same restriction you have? Just trying to think this through over here.
